Emergency: All power restored to the campus

March 13, 2015 at 2:30pm: Update

A partial power outage occurred on campus this morning at approximately 8 a.m. with all power restored as of 10 a.m. Affected areas included:

  • Thornton Hospital
  • Engineering/EBU-2
  • IR/PS
  • Institute of the Americas
  • ERC Administration
  • ERC Housing
  • Canyon View Dining Hall
  • North Campus Housing
  • North Point Drive Visitor Information Booth
  • The Rady School
  • Social Sciences
  • Pangea Parking Structure
  • RIMAC Annex
  • Spanos Field Facilities

The outage was the result of ongoing construction on the East Campus at Thornton Hospital. A piece of pipe support cable cut by the contractor fell into an electrical transformer. The electrical short caused the breaker feeding Thornton to trip, and the ripple effect caused a failure at the ERC transformer surge protector. This created a power outage in the Marshall College and ERC areas as well as the RIMAC Annex.

Facilities Management crews worked to isolate the cause and restore power to all areas as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and thank you for your understanding in this matter.
